These were my earliest memories of what you might consider to be art direction with my mum being the client. I chose the design, layout, colour, best badge designs and fabric. All the pre-requisite skills of a designer. The town were I lived only had a few shops that sold half decent jeans and sportswear was it’s strength. Namely trainers. But the footwear that caught my eye were by a brand called Walsh. Worn by a lot of the professional rugby players of Widnes. What made them so fascinating is that they used a strip of snakeskin on the side of the boot.
And the brand name was hand written. So fresh and handmade in tonality. A real curve ball of design inspiration and whether it was by luck or by design, it merited a lot of respect. They weren’t doing that in Italy! A boutique appeared one day, with lot’s of cooler clothes than I’d seen before. I some how managed to get together enough money to buy a denim jacket. It was made by Fiorucci and was nicely detailed. It didn’t last too long as the arms wore out and the retailer didn’t last as long either as the shop closed. The city of Liverpool beckoned.
